Your First Day of School

5 years you’ve been my little boy,

My baby by my side,

If only I could keep you small,

Believe me, I have tried.

For today is your first day of school,

Your uniform laid out in a row,

Your Book Bag hung up on the hook,

You’re all good to go.

Your shiny shoes I know will play,

Football, Chase and the rest,

I hope you’ll remember my whispered words

“It doesn’t matter if you’re not the best.”

For today you’ll start a brand new stage,

And one that I’ll watch everyday,

“I love you, be good and have lots of fun,”

You’ll always hear me say.

You’ll meet lots of faces, grown ups, new friends,

Lots of names to fill your mind,

But all I ask is you be yourself,

Happy, polite and kind.

Don’t be afraid to try new things,

Mistakes will help you learn.

Have the confidence to use your voice,

And remember to take your turn.

Put up your hand and ask for help,

Because sometimes it will be really tough,

But remember however hard you try,

Your best will be good enough.

Here’s to the next exciting stage of your life. I can’t wait to share the journey with you. Walking you to school and picking you up has always been a dream of mine. And now, as of today, it’s a reality.

Have a great day beautiful boy.

I’ll be here with you, every step of the way: to hug you when you’ve learnt how to spell that tricky word; to hug you when you’ve got to the end of that really long book; to hug you when you and your friends fall out.

And I hope you will hug me too.

For today, I have to let you go, just a small bit.

I have to let you fly.

Love you so much, baby boy.

Love from Mummy.
